Abstract

A new finite element rolling contact algorithm U. Nackenhorst Institute of Mechanics University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg Abstract Rolling contact problems are computed efficiently by use of the finite el- ement method within an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) frame of reference. The time derivatives are replaced by gradients and steady state rolling appears as a time independent problem in space (e.g. Nackenhorst [1]). But there is the difficulty to model the contact condi- tions, i.e. the stick-slip conditions, because the tangential contact stresses can not be derived from a constitutive law directly. Following an analogy to plasticity introduced by Michalowski and Mroz [2] a new theory for tangential rolling contact conditions will be presented. Augmented Lagrangian techniques and the choice of arbitrary constitutive friction rules are included. Explicit and implicit finite element approxima- tions have been developed, while the expl
