Abstract

Two-dimensional random systems of non-equal rigid discs under uniaxial load are investigated, with the ultimate aim to simulate fracture processes in granular media. Various algorithms are used for generating random pack- ings of non-equal discs being in contact. The mechanical behaviour of the granular medium given by such a packing is described in a simplified form by a beam structure. This structure under given load is analyzed by means of the finite element software program ANSYS. The finite element calculation yields the forces between all discs being in contact. Given these forces, the stress distribution in the interior of each disc can be calculated and finally its fracture probability. 1 Introduction Particle comminution is a highly complic
