Abstract

An experimental and numerical investigation of fatigue crack growth in the channelled specimens is presented. Fatigue is numerical)* simulated with the finite element method in a series of calculations with changing geometry of the crack. At each crack increment, automatic mesh generator is used to cover the area under consideration with quadrilateral finite ele- ments. Experimental and numeric results are compared, and they include fatigue crack geometry and the time dependence of crack length. 1 Introduction Simulating fatigue crack propagation with finite element method eventualy leads to some kind of remeshing techique. There are two basic methods of doing this, not considering the possibility of adjusting the mesh manualy. One can set a fine element mesh in the region of expected crack propaga- tion a priory, and simulate the cr
