Abstract

A new numerical model for simulation of crack initiation and crack propagation in the contact area of two cylinders is presented. The model is used for numerical predictions of the service life of various contacting mechanical elements in respect to the surface pitting. The model simulates the complete fatigue process, i.e. the conditions required for crack initiation and then the simulation of the fatigue crack growth, and takes into account the material microstructure. The theory of dislocations motion on persistent slip bands is used to describe the process of crack initiation and the theory of the short cracks is used for simulation of the fatigue crack propagation from the initial to the critical crack length, when the of surface pitting occurs. The stresses in t
