Abstract

Monitoring is planned to be an integrated activity during the different phases of the implementation of the Swedish repository system. Site investigations, where monitoring is a part, are used to establish the Primary Baseline conditions of the repository site. Monitoring will be used to develop and demonstrate understanding of the repository site and the behaviour of the engineered barriers, to assist in the decision-making and to show compliance with international and national guidelines and regulations. This paper describes the essential elements of the monitoring programme and typical monitoring activities during the different phases.
