Abstract

In the last few years presentations at the WIT Air Pollution conferences have demonstrated the possibilities of remote sensing of particle concentrations from space over land and ocean (Holzer-Popp et al. [1, 2]). This paper describes the results of a first large-scale effort using the advanced capabilities of satellite monitoring of the global aerosol distribution by a synergetic retrieval algorithm. The major improvement lies in the capability to separate several components of the total particulate matter. As one example a climatological data set over Europe and Africa is presented, which was derived from fourteen months of synergetic observations of the aerosol optical signal. The results obtained include optical (aero
