Abstract

The use of pumps as turbines can offer equipment cost savings and seems to be adequate in run-of-the-river schemes of small or micro hydro developments, either for water supply systems, being an alternative solution for energy dissipate devices. Excessive head in some zones along the pipeline profile, normally characterises the favourable conditions to install micro turbines or pump/turbines instead of pressure reducing valves. Whenever it will be applied to drinking water ystems, the energy production will be influenced by the discharge demand. The hydrodynamic effects, induced by these machines, are strongly associated to the pump type, normally characterised through the specific speed.
