Abstract

Gases emission to the atmosphere from a mult i-layer landfill V. Popov, H. Power Wessex Institute of Technology, Ashurst Lodge, Ashurst, Southampton S040 7AA, UK Abstract A two dimensional numerical model for the emission of gases to the atmosphere from a multi-layer landfill was developed. The pro- posed model is based on the Boundary Element - Dual Reciprocity Method. A scaling factor (a technique commonly employed in lab- oratory studies but not in numerical analysis) was used leading to big improvement of the numerical results. With the aim of verifying the accuracy of the model, the analytical solution for the one dimen- sional nontransient case was derived and compared with the steady state solution found with the present numerical model. 1 Introduction One of the most popular ways to dispose of domestic and industrial waste is to bury it under layers of soil, usually ca
