Abstract

The paper provides a review of analytical solutions of the advection- diffusion equation, focussing in particular on recent non-Gaussian solutions. Practical operative models based on such solutions are presented. 1. Introduction Analytical solutions of equations are of fundamental importance in understanding and describing physical phenomena. Analytical solutions (as opposed to numerical ones) explicitly take into account all the parameters of a problem, so that their influence can be reliably investigated and it easy to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the solution, which is usually difficult to generate through numerical calculations. Unfortunately, no general solution is known for equations describing the atmospheric transport and dispersion of air pollution. We possess some specific solutions, the best-known being th
