Abstract

Pollutant transport models applied to accidental spills in coastal seas and estuaries Luminita, Michielsen, Popescu National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management(RIKZ), P. O.Box 20907, 2500 EX The Hague, The Netherlands ABSTRACT The North Sea, which is of great economic significance to The Netherlands, forms together with the Dutch estuaries an important ecosystem. Combating and reducing all forms of pollution is of great importance for the country. The National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management (RIKZ), part of the large organization Rijkswaterstaat uses several computational models to predict the transport and the spreading of various types of chemicals in the first days after an accidental spill. A short presentation of the background and set up of these models will be followed by examples of application to emergencies of the last years. 1.
