Recent disasters have confirmed the importance of adequate protection of coastal areas. The cumulative effect of development in these regions needs to be better understood in order to ensure that they are managed in a sustainable fashion. Given the dynamics of the processes taking place on shorelines and the multitude of aspects that need to be considered the problems involved are extremely challenging.
