Abstract The present paper aims at studying the spall strength of the metal material. The spall strength can be obtained by applying the Equation of material state in the theory of Grady, by which it is dependent on the rate and temperature. The present paper has made a simulation of the free-surface velocity history with a flyer, Al, to impact the target, Fe. The result of the above simulation shows that the spall strength has proved to be more suitable than constant P,. for the situation when micro-mechanisms are not so rigorous. 1 Introduction Dynamic fracture and fragmentation of a solid target may result from the application of a strong impulsive load.
