Abstract

The method of augmented Lagrangians has proven to be highly efficient and accurate for the finite element solution of quasistatic and low fre- quency dynamic contact problems; i.e., those problems which lend them- selves well to implicit time integration. This paper explores the develop- ment of an augmented Lagrangian framework for explicit dynamics and its extension to iterative (matrix free) solution of quasistatic problems. 1 Introduction Finite element implementations of contact problems have appeared fre- quently in the literature, and have traditionally emphasized problems amenable to quasistatic and implicit dynamic frameworks. In such treat- ments the contact fo
