Abstract We have already presented a new method for correcting a railway track irregularity [1] and developed the software for calculating an optimum con- trolling data for heavy tamping machine based on the optimization method [2]. So far, through the experimental use in the field these new method have been confirmed to be effective and useful. In this paper we give the formal definition of the formulation to the op- timization problem of correcting a railway track irregularity under various constraints [3].
