Abstract

This paper presents an investigation and an implementation of a Heavy Mud Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD) for suppressing wind-induced vibration of structures. Heavy Mud TLD is one kind of the passive dampers utilizing heavy mud sloshing in rigid containers. A shaking table experiment was carried out to verify the effectiveness of Heavy Mud TLD. The simulations based on the wave theory shows the good agreement between the measurement and the prediction. Heavy Mud TLD was applied to a high RC bridge pier for reducing wind induced vibration. The free vibration tests show that the structural damping ratio was increased from about 0.8% to 2.4% by installing the Heavy Mud 1 Introdu
