Abstract

Impact assessment of highway foundation layers P. Fleming Loughborough University of Technology, Loughborough, Leicester shir eLE 11 3TU, UK 1 INTRODUCTION Pavement construction in the UK remains essentially based upon a method specification, defining the materials and methods of placement and compaction to give an adequate pavement structure. However, the problem of increasing traffic has led to new and improved materials being developed to satisfy these increasingly severe service conditions and the requirement for new design techniques to include for these. Current research efforts are aimed toward a fully analytical design methodology with the introduction of performance specifications, which would provide a more efficient product tailored specifically to the design requirements. A pre-requisite of performance specifications, and improvements in the monitoring of current constructions, is suitable equipment able to assess each of the completed pavement layers insit
