Abstract Determining the carrying capacity of a rolling contact in low rotational speed axial bearings doesn't yield satisfactory results when standard criteria for determining the rolling contact carrying capacity are applied. This is why we decided to simulate sub-surface elastic and plastic strain and contact stress in correlation with number of load cycles by using the Pedersen model of continuum damage mechanics. The model considers isotropic and kinematical hardening or softening and growth of material damage with increasing the load cycle number. The damage model is integrated into the fini
