Abstract

This paper presents a preliminary approach to developing an explanation facility for model-based diagnostic systems by the use of causal ordering. The proposed explanation generation technique works by searching through the causal graph derived from the structural model of the physical system under diagnosis. Typical experimental results are provided, demonstrating the potential of this technique and, also, indicating its limitations. 1 Introduction Model-based diagnosis of continuous dynamic systems is concerned with automatically locating faults in engineering plant by reasoning about or simulating a model of the system under diagnosis.
