Abstract

This paper describes the results of a research project to examine the application of non-monotonic reasoning to the problem of component selection. The work involves the use of a temporal truth maintenance system to support the selection of components in process plants. The particular aspect reported here concerns the reuse of stored knowledge to reduce the number of calcula- tions to make new selections. The characteristics of the problem domain suggest the use of a non-monot- onic reasoning solution. This paper outlines the design of a decision support sys- tem and concentrates on describing case studies and results obtained. 1 Introduction Designing any item constructed from parts, such as a process plant or a piece of software, requires a great deal of expertise in selecting the o
