Abstract

This research has been carried out in a laboratory flume, located at the University of Caen, to evaluate the impact of turbulence and shear stress variation on the boundary layer thickness. Several hydrodynamic parameters were studied such as: velocity profiles, and turbulent boundary layer growth. The flow issued from a bottom outlet gate was also observed with respect to variation of different parameters (i.e. water level, installed obstructions effects in the upstream of the outlet). Keywords: hydraulic structures, boundary layers, fluid dynamics, turbulence, velocity profile. 1 Introduction Dams are very important for involuntary perturbations of sediment transport in rivers. More than 30000 large dams have been constructed over a period of 50 years in the world, which
