Abstract

In tliis paper, a very precise multi-layered 3-D shell finite element is developed based on the layerwise higher-order displacement assumptions. The present shell element has the following novel features: (a) The present finite element can exactly model a laminated shell composed of the unlimited number of different material layups (the layerwise model); (b) The higher-order displacement assumption is employed, which leads to the cubic variations of the in-plane strains, the parabolic of the transverse-shear strains and the linear of the transverse-normal strain in the thickness direction for each layer; (c) The interfacial displacement constraints are approximated by t
