Abstract

Effect of a-Pinene and cw-Verbenol on the Rate of S(IV) Oxidation Catalysed by Fe A contribution to subproject CMD J Ziajka and W Pasiuk-Bronikowska Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kasprzaka 44/52, 01-224 Warsaw, Poland Introduction Terpenes are known to enter various oxidative destruction schemes leading to a number of products, most often still active. The mechanism of chemical transformations of terpenes, although intensely studied within gas-phase chemistry, has not yet been sufficiently recognised with respect to aqueous- phase chemistry . In this work attempts are directed toward elucidation of the capability of a-pinene, the frequent component of bioemission, and c/s-verbenol, one of the products of a-pinene transformation, to join the S(IV) autoxidation scheme as sulfoxo radical scavengers. Laboratory experiments were conducted to verify whether terpenes m
