Abstract

A mathematical model of fluids and solutes kinetics in hemodialysis is pre- sented and its ability in providing realistic responses is evaluated. The model includes a bi compart mental description of urea, sodium, potassium kinetics and an algebraic characterization of the mass-transfer in the dia- lyzer. The corresponding non-linear system of eight first order differential equations has been implemented in SIMULINK™, an advanced simulation tool which facilitates model definition and analysis. Simulation results com- pare well with experimental data on water loss and blood urea, sodium and potassium concentrations measured during biofiltration. In addition, the predictions on the non directly measurable variables facilitate the interpre- tation of the physiopathological mechanisms underlying dialysis
