The ever-growing need for energy has given rise to a significant increase in the extraction and transportation of oil. As a consequence there has been an increase in the number of spills from oil wells and tankers at sea, resulting in significant environmental problems. The development of adequate oil spill contingency plans requires information about a large number of physical, chemical and biologically complex phenomena. Research results on oil spill modelling, prevention and mitigation methods are therefore an essential tool for engineers and managers involved in such planning.
This book addresses recent research advances from many countries in oil spill modelling, prevention, behaviour, effects, control, and cleanup techniques.
